ELC01 - The Ethical IBCLC: Principles and Responsibilities

$88.00 AUD

This course provides an understanding of ethics, dilemmas and enables IBCLCs to implement a decision-making framework to inform ethical best practice. Ethical decision making in health is encountered by practitioners on a regular basis. Translating ethical standards and applying them to clinical practice requires a sound knowledge of frameworks and systems to ensure public safety.

Course Information

This course is equivalent to 8 hours of learning. The completed 8 hours can be used as:

  • Ethics (E) Continuing Education Recognition Points (CERPs) for recertifying International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs)
  • Comprehensive education related to the lactation specific education for the IBLCE® exam eligibility and/or
  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for medical officers, midwives, nurses and allied health professionals.

This course follows a specific visiting order to illustrate the interrelated elements of understanding ethics. The procedural structure is designed to direct you on a journey of sequential learning, that is, learning that begins with developing or revisiting ethics, through to developing a more sceptical but respectful exploration and application of ethics.

There are three sections in this short course. The first section call Understanding Ethics is a revision (from your pre-exam learning) of ethical approaches and principles, with an integration of human rights and legal aspects of IBCLC work.

The second section is called How to Avoid Bad Habits and it begins with a self-reflective exploration, followed by considering attributes of robust decision-making frameworks, and closing with the standards and codes that guide IBCLCs.

The third section is The Secret to Being Ethical. This section identifies barriers to ethical decision making, addresses some common ethical dilemmas and finally, it examines the disciplinary process of the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners.
