Comprehensive Lactation Consultant Examination Preparation Program

Facts of Life LC Exam Prep Program – 2020

Developed in Australian by an experienced International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC®), Program Director and Education Provider the program reflects the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE®) Detailed Course Content, Clinical Competencies and Code of Professional Conduct. The program has thirteen individual courses that can be activated to suit your learning style and pace.

EP01

Breastfeeding: An Essential Health Issue

The importance of breastfeeding and public health initiatives that support breastfeeding are addressed in this course. Marketing the health, economic and environmental benefits of breastfeeding and potential hazards of not breastfeeding are examined. Global, international and national public health initiatives are identified.

Foundational Governing Factors

Legal, ethics and research approaches in lactation practice underpin this course:

  • Ethical responsibilities of an IBCLC©
  • Legal issues in Lactation Consultancy
  • Basic research principles

EP03

Mammary Magnificence: Breast Development

Breast development begins in utero and continues throughout a woman's life. At puberty, the breasts undergo a growth phase. Pregnancy and birth further refine and develop the breast tissues to enable breastmilk production. Menopause completes the cycle of breast development.

EP04

Infant Ingenuity: Infant Anatomy & Physiology

The uniqueness of the baby’s oral anatomy and reflexes are suited to breastfeed. The structure and function of the infant's face and mouth play an integral role in breastfeeding. This course delvesinto the infant's role in educating the breast to produce milk.

Scientific Significance of Breastmilk

The science of breastmilk, breastmilk immunology, biochemistry and infant digestion are featured in this session. Breastmilk is uniquely superior in providing food for babies, containing living elements that modulate growth and development in the baby, while transferring benefits to the mother. Human milk is both comlpex and fascinating!

Maternal Manifestations

Common, early and unexpected maternal issues are presented in  this course in addition to an introduction to some maternal pathological conditions that may impact breastfeeding. Technologies that may assist women to continue to breastfeed are also practically applied.

More Maternal Manifestations

This course further seeks to examine maternal pathology and infectious diseases. Technologies that may assist women to continue to breastfeed are also practically applied.

EP08

Infant Intentions Interrupted

Recognition of infant anatomical variations and their relationship to breastfeeding and an introduction to infant pathology are investigated in this session. Technologies that may assist babies to continue to breastfeed are also practically applied.

EP09

More Infant Intentions Interrupted

This course further explores infant pathology and infectious diseases. Technologies that may assist babies to continue to breastfeed are also discussed and practically applied.

EP10

Special Circumstances

Vulnerable populations and situations that require closer monitoring such as breastfeeding preterm babies feature in this course. Additionally, induced and relactation, human milk banks, LGBTIQ, fostering or adopting a baby and assisted fertilisation and lactation are examined.

EP11

Pharmacotherapeutics & Lactation

Understanding the therapeutic use and effect of drugs during lactation is an essential part of being an IBCLC given drugs and lactation can present as a challenge for the continuation of breastfeeding. For this reason, this course takes an extensive look at many drugs and their impact, if any, on the continuation of breastfeeding.

Growing Up Being Breastfed

Normal breastfeeding behaviours up to and beyond six months exclusivity is becoming a rare life event due to excessive marketing startegies and pressures for mothers returning to paid emplyment. This course searches the normality of exclusive breastfeeding and the timeliness of introducing family foods to a baby.

Communication & Counselling Skills for Lactation Support

Effective communication skills enhance the professional relationship between the IBCLC and woman. Effective communication is the foundation skill in providing meaningful counselling during the professional partnership between a woman and the IBCLC. This course explores communication and counselling skills as separate entities that are essential to each other.


Continuing Education Recognition Points (CERPs) Courses

The Ethical IBCLC - Principles and Responsibilities

This 8-hour course addresses ethical and legal principles and responsibilities that are inherent in the provision of safe, ethical IBCLC practice. The course seeks the IBLCLC to explore ethical decision-making with a view of how ethical frameworks inform best practice. Further, the course looks at how to practically apply ethical principles to practice and in doing so, investigates factors that prohibit ethical behaviour.

This course has been certified by IBLCE as 8 E CERPs.

Additional Courses

Therapeutic Relationships in Professional Care

This 5-hour course is designed for midwives, working in a variety of settings, where management of care is for a woman who chooses care outside of recognised professional guidelines or against professional advice.

The course reminds midwives of the legal and ethical responsibilities of providing midwifery practice and looks at the importance of effective communication to enhance decision-making. Similarly, the role of concise documentation is examined in providing a professional reflection of the overall experience.
