EP12: Growing Up Being Breastfed

Breastfeeding up to and beyond 12 months: normal behaviours, growth, sleep, parenting transition and cultural perspectives

Exclusive breastfeeding to six months and continued breastfeeding beyond are increasingly rare due to marketing pressures and return to paid work. This course explores normal and extended breastfeeding and evidence‑based timing for introducing family foods.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Critically analyse feeding patterns and developmental trajectories of breastfed children to evaluate growth progression and culturally responsive weaning practices.
  2. Critically evaluate infant readiness indicators for complementary feeding to develop evidence-based introduction strategies that support continued breastfeeding.
  3. Critically differentiate complementary feeding from weaning processes to evaluate developmentally appropriate feeding transitions and breastfeeding continuation strategies.
  4. Critically evaluate infant developmental milestones to differentiate normal progression from delays and inform evidence-based referral and assessment strategies.
  5. Critically evaluate nutritional requirements of lactating women to inform evidence-based dietary recommendations that optimise maternal health and milk production.
