RRR01: I. Development and Nutrition

IBLCE Domain I. Development and Nutrition: Breastmilk nutrition, milk sharing, preterm feeding, and chrononutrition essentials

IBLCE Domain I. Development and Nutrition examines the developmentally appropriate feeding behaviours, the nutritional composition and role of human milk, and the impact of feeding practices on short- and long-term health outcomes, enabling lactation professionals to assess, support, and optimise infant nutrition across diverse contexts.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Explore contemporary practices and ethics of milk sharing, including informal peer-to-peer sharing and donor human milk, to support safe, informed decision‑making for families and health professionals.
  2. Explain the nutritional composition and bioactive properties of breastmilk across lactation, and how these contribute to optimal infant growth, immune protection, and long‑term health outcomes.
  3. Introduce the emerging field of human milk chrononutrition, describing how diurnal and lactation‑stage variation in breastmilk components may influence infant physiology, sleep–wake patterns, and metabolic programming.
