EP04: Infant Ingenuity: Infant Anatomy & Physiology

Newborn neurobiology and breast anatomy: how early reflexes and unique features support breastfeeding establishment

The uniqueness of the baby's oral anatomy and reflexes are well suited to breastfeeding. The structure and function of the infant's face and mouth play an integral role in breastfeeding. This course delves into the infant's role in educating the breast to produce milk.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Appraise infant oral anatomical structures and reflex mechanisms to evaluate their functional role in effective breastfeeding biomechanics.
  2. Critically analyse innate feeding behaviours to optimise latch effectiveness, milk transfer, and maternal-infant attachment strategies.
  3. Critically evaluate positioning and attachment techniques to optimise maternal comfort, milk transfer efficiency, and breastfeeding outcomes in diverse contexts.
  4. Critically evaluate skin-to-skin contact and early feeding practices to optimise physiological stability, maternal-infant attachment, and breastfeeding initiation.
  5. Critically analyse infant gastrointestinal development and microbiome colonisation to evaluate the immunological and digestive benefits of human milk.
