RRR04: IV. Pharmacology and Toxicology

IBLCE Domain IV. Pharmacology & Toxicology: Medication safety in breastfeeding: drug transfer, evidence-based updates, and clinical decision-making for IBCLCs

IBLCE Domain IV. Pharmacology & Toxicology emphasises current evidence on maternal medication use during breastfeeding, pharmacokinetics of drug transfer into human milk, toxicological considerations, and evidence-based risk-benefit assessment.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Analyse current evidence and guidelines on the use of alcohol and cannabis in breastfeeding, including pharmacokinetics in human milk, potential short‑ and long‑term infant effects, and risk‑reduction counselling strategies.
  2. Evaluate the safety profiles, milk transfer, and potential infant and maternal impacts of commonly used ADHD medications during lactation to support shared decision‑making and monitoring plans.
  3. Examine emerging data on prescription and over‑the‑counter weight‑loss medications in the context of breastfeeding, including mechanisms of action, theoretical and known risks to the breastfed infant, and evidence‑informed recommendations when evidence is limited.
