Developing a therapeutic relationship when providing maternity care is a vital component that underpins a successful experience for both the woman and midwife. Midwifery is a complex profession that is able to meet the sometimes complex needs of women. Significantly, midwives need to accurately reflect their management of care particularly when a woman chooses care outside of recognised professional guidelines or against professional advice.
Course Information
This course is equivalent to 5 hours of learning. The 5 hours completed can be used as:
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for midwives
Access Time
- This single course is open for 30 days from the time of activation.

Course Learning Outcomes
- Apply the legal principle of autonomy of the woman to choose 'care' outside applicable guidelines and/or against professional advice
- Indentify guidelines which support decision-making for the midwife when providing care to women
- Outline the function of effective and adequate documentation by the midwife for the provision of woman-centred care and ensuring safe and professional practice for the midwife and effective communication of the woman's wishes for her care ensuring her informed consent, understanding of risk and recognising her accountability for decisions made
- Use the guideline: Partnering with the woman who declines recommended maternity care
- Discuss the potential risks and benefits of completing documentation with women who choose a plan that falls outside applicable guidelines and/or professional advice
