RRR05: V. Psychology, Sociology, and Anthropology
IBLCE Domain V. Psychology, Sociology, and Anthropology Evidence-based updates on psychosocial determinants, cultural contexts, and human behaviour for IBCLCs
IBLCE Domain V. Psychology, Sociology, and Anthropology examines current evidence on mental health in the perinatal period, social determinants of breastfeeding, transition to parenthood, mindful breastfeeding weaning and the importance of sleep, and the psychosocial factors influencing infant feeding decisions.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Explore how the transition to parenthood reshapes identity, roles, and relationships, and how these psychological and sociocultural shifts influence breastfeeding expectations, confidence, and help‑seeking.
- Examine mindful breastfeeding as a framework for supporting parental emotional regulation, body awareness, and attunement to infant cues, with attention to diverse cultural narratives about “good” parenting and feeding.
- Analyse the emotional, relational, and cultural dimensions of weaning and infant sleep, including how beliefs about self‑soothing, night‑time feeding, and “sleep training” shape parental decision‑making and experiences of support or judgement.
